The Apatsahayeswarar Temple at Alangudi is the Navagraha temple for Guru, the planet Jupiter. Here Guru is worshipped in the form of Dakshinamurthy, Lord Shiva as the supreme teacher.

Significance

The name Apatsahayeswarar means “the Lord who rescues from danger”. According to legend, Shiva consumed the halahala poison that emerged during the churning of the ocean at this place to protect the world — which is why the village is known as Alangudi (from alam, poison). Devotees pray here for wisdom, prosperity and the removal of obstacles.
