Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India, and its life still revolves around the Meenakshi Amman Temple. For pilgrims, it is also the gateway to the temples of southern Tamil Nadu.
Within the city limits, Thiruparankundram is the first of Lord Murugan’s six abodes. North of the city, in the Alagar hills, Pazhamudircholai is the sixth, just above the Kallazhagar Temple. All three can be visited in a single day on our Madurai temple tour.
Madurai is the usual starting point for Rameswaram, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Many families extend the trip along the coast to the seashore Murugan temple at Tiruchendur and on to Kanyakumari.
To the north-east lie Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam — the heartland of Chola temple architecture and the Navagraha circuit. These are easily reached from Madurai by road, either as separate trips or as one longer pilgrimage.
