Lord Murugan — also worshipped as Kartikeya, Subramanya, Skanda and Kumaran — holds a special place in Tamil devotion. His temples are often built on hilltops, and climbing the steps to the shrine is itself part of the pilgrimage for many families.
Tamil Nadu has hundreds of Murugan temples, but a few stand out for pilgrims. Palani is among the most visited temples in the state. Marudamalai, on the edge of Coimbatore, is a favourite weekend darshan for families in the Kongu region. Tiruchendur is the only one of the six principal abodes on the seashore. The six together are known as the Arupadai Veedu.
