Tour Overview
Kumbakonam is often called the temple town of Tamil Nadu — and with good reason. Within a short drive of the town lie dozens of ancient shrines, including several Divya Desams, one of Murugan’s six abodes and some of the finest Chola architecture anywhere.
On the first afternoon you explore the town itself: the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, the Vaishnavite Sarangapani Temple, and the sacred Mahamaham tank. The second day covers the surroundings — Swamimalai, the exquisite Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, and Thirunageswaram with the neighbouring Uppiliappan Temple.
Because so many temples are close together, a private vehicle with a driver who knows the area makes a real difference to how much you can see comfortably.
