The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world. It occupies much of an island formed by the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers, and its seven concentric walled enclosures contain streets, homes and markets as well as shrines.
Significance
Srirangam is revered as the first and foremost of the 108 Divya Desams. Lord Vishnu is worshipped here as Ranganatha, reclining on the serpent Adisesha. The temple is closely associated with the great Vaishnava teacher Ramanujacharya, and was praised by almost all the Alvar saints.
The towering Rajagopuram, completed in the late twentieth century, is among the tallest temple towers in Asia and can be seen from across Tiruchirappalli.
