The Sri Chamundeshwari Temple crowns Chamundi Hills on the south-eastern edge of Mysore. The goddess Chamundeshwari, a fierce form of Durga, has long been the family deity of the Wadiyar rulers of Mysore.

Significance

According to legend, Goddess Chamundeshwari slew the buffalo-demon Mahishasura here — the city’s name is derived from him. This victory is celebrated during the ten-day Mysore Dasara festival, when the goddess is taken in procession through the city.

On the step path up the hill stands a large monolithic Nandi, carved in the seventeenth century, which is a popular stop for devotees.
