Ooty is best known as a hill station, but many visitors combine their Nilgiris holiday with a temple visit on the way in or out. The town sits between Coimbatore, Mysore and Kerala, so several important temples are within reach.
The drive down the Mettupalayam ghat brings you to Coimbatore, where Marudamalai and the Isha Yoga Centre are a short drive from each other. Families returning home via Coimbatore airport or railway station often fit in darshan on the final day.
Crossing the Mudumalai and Bandipur forests takes you into Karnataka, to Chamundi Hills and the Nanjangud Srikanteshwara Temple. This is a good option if you are continuing to Bangalore. Note that forest check-post timings on this route are regulated and night travel through the reserve is restricted.
Via Gudalur and the Nilambur ghat, Ooty also connects to Kerala, making Guruvayur a possible extension.
For hill roads we recommend an Innova or Innova Crysta for smaller groups. Larger groups can travel in a 14-seater Traveller; in the cool Nilgiris climate the non-AC version is often perfectly comfortable.
