Suriyanar Kovil is the Navagraha temple for Surya, the Sun. Unlike most Navagraha temples, where the graha has a shrine within a Shiva temple, here the Sun god himself is the main deity — accompanied by his consorts Usha and Pratyusha.

Significance

The temple was built in the Chola period, around the late eleventh century. Shrines to the other eight grahas surround the main sanctum, making it a complete Navagraha temple in itself. Devotees pray here for health, vitality and success.
