The Swetharanyeswarar Temple at Thiruvenkadu is the Navagraha temple for Budha, the planet Mercury. It lies near the coast, not far from the ancient port town of Poompuhar.

Significance

The presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Swetharanyeswarar — “Lord of the white forest”. The temple is also known for its shrine to Aghora Murthy, a fierce form of Shiva, and its separate shrine to Budha. Devotees pray to Budha for intelligence, learning and communication skills.

The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of the Nayanmar saints.
