The Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Tiruchendur is the only one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan built on the seashore. Its gopuram rises directly above the beach of the Gulf of Mannar.
Significance
Tiruchendur is the second of the Arupadai Veedu. It is believed to be the place where Lord Murugan defeated the demon Surapadman and afterwards worshipped Lord Shiva. That victory is re-enacted every year during Kanda Sashti in the Soorasamharam ceremony on the beach — one of the most important Murugan festivals in Tamil Nadu.
Visiting
Tiruchendur is often visited on the coastal route between Rameswaram and Kanyakumari. It is included in our Madurai – Rameswaram – Kanyakumari tour and the Arupadai Veedu tour.
