Thiruparankundram is the first of the Arupadai Veedu, the six abodes of Lord Murugan. The temple is built against a large rock hill on the southern edge of Madurai, and its sanctum is carved directly into the rock.

Significance

According to tradition, this is where Lord Murugan married Deivanai, the daughter of Indra, after his victory over the demon Surapadman. For this reason the temple is especially popular for weddings and for devotees praying for marriage.

Unusually, the rock-cut sanctum also contains shrines to Shiva, Vishnu, Durga and Ganesha alongside Murugan. The temple dates back to the Pandya era.
