Tour Overview
Thanjavur was the capital of the great Chola empire, and its crowning glory — the Brihadeeswarar Temple — is still one of the most awe-inspiring temples in India. This tour gives you time to experience it properly.
You arrive in the afternoon, when the light on the granite vimana is at its best, and have the evening to walk the vast courtyard and see the great Nandi. The second day covers the temples around Thanjavur: the Punnainallur Mariamman Temple, much loved by local devotees; the Aiyarappar Temple at Thiruvaiyaru on the Kaveri; and Thingalur, the Navagraha temple for the Moon.

Madurai → Tiruchirappalli → Thanjavur
Morning pickup and drive to Thanjavur. After lunch, visit the Brihadeeswarar Temple, staying on for the evening light on the great vimana. Overnight in Thanjavur.

Temples around Thanjavur and return
Thanjavur → Punnainallur → Thiruvaiyaru → Thingalur → Madurai
Early visit to the Punnainallur Mariamman Temple. Continue to Thiruvaiyaru for the Aiyarappar Temple on the banks of the Kaveri, and nearby Thingalur, the Navagraha temple for Chandra. Return journey in the afternoon.
